Skincare is constantly evolving as new research and developments push the industry forward. We are often looking for the newest and best products and services to make sure we look our best. One relatively recent development is utilizing MicroCurrent treatment, in addition to other facial treatments, to improve the look of aging skin. However, many individuals have yet to try the service for themselves and I think it is because many are unaware of what “MicroCurrent treatments” actually are and what they can do for your skin. So let’s learn a little more about this amazing treatment!

MicroCurrent treatment therapy involves the use of low-level electrical currents to retrain and stimulate the muscle underlying the layers of skin. Facial skin is somewhat different than that of skin elsewhere on the body, as facial skin is directly connected to the underlying muscle, as opposed to being separated by a layer of subcutaneous fatty tissue, which is why this anti-aging treatment works especially well. In the 1980’s MicroCurrent treatments were approved by the FDA for muscle stimulation for a variety of conditions (e.g., Bell’s palsy) before its approval and widespread use in the esthetics and cosmetology industry.
These MicroCurrent treatments are capable of stimulating underlying facial muscle using gentle currents that penetrate the skin. This muscle stimulation triggers the production of adenosine triphosphate, ATP, which is responsible for the production of structural proteins in the skin, these proteins include the skin superstars- collagen and elastin. As a result, skin appears younger, firmer and more lifted and natural contours are enhanced from the very first treatment.

So how does the treatment actually work?
Prior to the treatment, the skin is cleansed and exfoliated following the same basic steps as when you come in for a facial. After the skin is prepped, a thin layer of conductive gel is applied to the skin to ensure proper penetration of the MicroCurrents. Then two electrode tools are used to stimulate the underlying facial muscles, both by isolating and stimulating individual muscles and working the muscles as groups. The result is firmer underlying muscles, and firmer muscles result in a more lifted look overall. For optimal results a treatment regimen can be designed based on your skincare needs. Results after several treatments result in a noticeable lift, which is why this treatment is often offered as an alternative to a surgical facelift.
