'Brows'-ing Eyebrow Trends from the Past

The eyebrows are definitely having their moment right now! And, in my opinion it is well deserved. Not only do our eyebrow help protect our eyes from debris, they are also vital in expressing the intricacies of our emotions and are a major part of non-verbal communication. Just think of the last time you gave your best friend thatlook and were able to convey exactly what you were thinking without saying a word- chances are your eyebrows did most of the talking!

Eyebrows have been aesthetically important since Ancient Egypt, during her reign Cleopatra was thought to have darkened her brows with charcoal, as a strong brow was a symbol of personal power at the time. Over the years, eyebrow trends have definitely changed and evolved but it is interesting to see that our current trend is more in step with Cleopatra than Old Hollywood.

So how did we get to the power brows of present? Let’s take a look at brow trends since the 1950s.

1950s: The style of the decade was adopted by the celebrities of the time: Marilyn Monroe, Doris Day and Elizabeth Taylor. These starlets groomed their eyebrows in a way which created a somewhat dramatic peak at the top of their arch, from which the tail of the eyebrow came down at an angle. The brows were thicker than they had been in decades past and slightly more natural, in terms of fullness. Often women would fill their brows in with an eyebrow pencil that was a shade darker than their natural color to imitate celebrities, like Marilyn Monroe, whose brow color contrasted her platinum blonde hair.

1960s: In the 1960s the trend shifted towards a brow that was much more rounded, naturally colored brow than in the previous decade. Twiggy, Sophia Lauren and Barbara Streisand were the trendsetters of the era.

1970s: During the 70s eyebrows were thin, rounded with an arch that followed the natural brow. Celebrities like Farrah Fawcett, Pam Grier and Goldie Hawn all sported slightly thin, naturally arched brows during this time.

1980s: As the 1970 gave way to the 1980s the style pendulum began to swing back to strong, powerful brows. Brooke Shields and Madonna rocked full, power brows, that some may even describe as bushy or slightly unruly. It should be no surprise as everything in the 1980s seem to be bigger (think about those giant shoulder pads!) than in years past.

1990s: The 1990s are remembered by some as the decade in which they tweezed their brows to the point of no return. Thin, sparse brows were all the rage and were everywhere from runway models to suburbia. During the days before wide-spread internet usage, publications like Cosmopolitan and YM helped fuel the trend.

2000-present: When 2000 hit many of us were still rocking a barely-there brow but, the tides has definitely turned. Fashion trendsetter, Cara Delevingne’s brows were front and center and people took notice and before long lush, full brows were mainstream and making a statement.

As an esthetician, I love the latest brow trend which allows my clients to grow in their once sparse brows and take care of them with regular maintenance.
